I.33 is a famously incomprehensible fencing manual, the oldest one surviving in Europe. There were many attempts to interpret it, but we never got an interpretation able to explain the whole manual in a logical and coherent way. This is my attempt at providing such interpretation.

A great care was put in developing the inner logic and underlying theory behind the manual. At the very beginning, I decided what basic assumptions I will be taking as a basis for my interpretation. I started by exploring the terminology that the priest was using, I tried applying it on the plays of I.33 and then adjusting it. I developed an understanding of I.33 images, that is controled by rules and can explain the images quite reliably. For the whole time, I was checking my interpretation for consistency (terms cannot change meaning, fencing advices have to be consistent) and functionality (the manual should describe a reasonable martial art). And I was adjusting my older ideas if neccessary.

Now I have a coherent interpretation of the whole manual. I cannot explain everything in the manual, but certainly most of it I can. I was (and still am) documenting my interpretation proces on YouTube. But now I feel I can finally present the interpretation as a whole. And that's why this web exists.

I have provided a description of underlying logic and ideas of I.33 under Terms & theory. If you want to know how I got to these conclusions, look at The interpretation, and also watch my videos. On many pages I provide links to my Youtube videos talking at least partially about the subject. Sometimes there are multiple videos linked, that can demonstrate development of my understanding of the subject. I will be filling in more videos gradually. Positions, Sieges, and Contact distance techniques are each talking about its part of interpretation.

And at the end, there is The source. There you will find the whole I.33 in images, original and translated text. And also overview of all plays in the manual, every one with my commentary. So feel free to dive in there and use it. And if you want to write me a comment, please do it under some of my videos.

A little sample of the interpretation, provided in a more thrilling way (and with a few mistakes; I have made some adjustments to the interpretation since these videos were shot):
